The Vellalar tribes are described as a landed gentry who irrigated the wet lands and the Karalar were the landed gentry in the dry lands.

They were a dominant secular aristocratic caste who contributed as courtiers, army officers, lower ranks of the bureaucracy and upper layer of the peasantry.

The Vellalars who were land owners and tillers of the soil and held offices pertaining to land,
 were ranked as Sat-Sudra in the 1901 census.with the Government of Madras recognising that the
Four fold division did not describe the South Indian, or Dravidian, society adequately.
The Vellalars of Sri Lanka have been chronicled clearly in the Yalpana Vaipava Malai and other historical texts of Jaffna kingdom. 

From the 13th century when migration of Vellalar chiefs to Jaffna took place,
Tamil Nadu has seen a decline in the traditional power of Vellalars except in Kongu Nadu
Of the three Vellala communities, the Pillais are the most exogamous.

Thus in many parts of Tamil Nadu, there are many people belonging to diverse communities wh ocall themselves as Pillais again for obvious social upliftment. Thus, the sub-caste system among Pillais is very diverse. Even among the Vella Pillais, eight major groups can be identified the Karuneega Pillai Kanaku Pillai mainly in Thondai mandalam area) Karkattha Pillai Thanjavur kumbakonam area many people belonging to this community are wrongly mistaken as Brahmins due to the strong association between these two communities in the Cauvery belt area  Thuluva Vella Pillai, Shoziya Vella Pillai,  Pandiya Vella Pillai, Thirunelvelli Siva Pillai, Nanjil Pillai Sengottai Pillaimar and 8. kKerala Pillai Chera Vellalar.

Since there are so many sub-castes, hierarchy among them is inevitable. Even though the Thirunelvelli Siva Pillais are Vella Pillais who belong to the Pandiya mandalam, they tend to differentiate themselves from the non-vegetarian Pandiya Pillais and claim supremacy. Similarly, even though the Shoziya Vellals and Karkathars both inhabit Chola mandalam and share their Pillai surnames, the vegetarian Karkathars claim supremacy over the non–vegetarian Shoziya Vellas.
the most isolated group is the Nanjil Pillais.

They inhabit the Kumari mavattam Nagerkovil and Kanyakumari.The other Tamil Pillais don’t marry with them, since these people are strongly influenced by the Kerala culture. 

The Nagerkovil Kanyakumari area is located on the tip of Kerala and Tamil Nadu;
it was once part of Kerala and is now in Tamil Nadu.
The strong Kerala influence is seen in there food habits, language slang and other customs which sort of differentiate them from the other Tamil Pillai communities. But since this community is of Tamilian origin, marriage with the Kerala Nairs, Menons and Pillais is prohibited. 

Thus the Vellala community of Tamil Nadu and perhaps Kerala even though has a long heritage which can be traced back to Sangam literature is largely diverse and much unknown to the modern world.

Pillai community or called in Tamil colloquially as Pillaimars is also known as
Vellalarfrom the Tamil word Vellaanmai, those who are involved in agricultural activities.This community is a small but significant in terms of their contribution to society.They are primarily present around southern districts of Tamil Nadu - Tirunelveli, Tuticorin, Kanyakumari and are spread
across Tanjavur and a lot of them have migrated to Chennai and other places for employment opportunities.

They are mainly classified as Saiva Vellalar pure vegetarians & worshippers of Lord Shiva
 and Asaiva Vellalar non-vegetarians & worshippers of Lord Shiva. The Saiva Pillai or Vellalars
are a minority within this community and take great pride in maintaining their community customs and traditions. 

They are strict vegetarians, place emphasis on educationand are sophisticated like Brahmins but do not perform priestly duties.
